Our Mission

2024 Gala

Our Story:

RAYWA (Raising Awareness of Youth with Autism) is a nonprofit organization co-founded by Dr. Rashmee Sharma and Ms. Manee Kamboj. The organization is dedicated to creating meaningful opportunities for youth with autism, focusing on both young women and men as they transition from high school into higher education and the workforce.

The inspiration for RAYWA stemmed from Dr. Sharma’s personal experiences and challenges in finding post-secondary support for her step-daughter, who has autism. This experience highlighted a broader issue: the lack of adequate resources and opportunities for autistic youth to continue their education and gain employment. Determined to change this, Dr. Sharma, alongside Ms. Kamboj, undertook extensive research to identify and develop strategies that would provide these young individuals with the tools they need to succeed.

RAYWA's approach includes forging partnerships with organizations that specialize in supporting neurodiverse youth and advocating for workplace inclusivity. Their goal is to bridge the gap between the capabilities of these young individuals and the opportunities available to them by:
  • Promoting awareness about the potential and skills of youth with autism.
  • Facilitating connections between potential employers and neurodiverse job seekers.
  • Ensuring access to educational and vocational training that caters to their unique needs.

The importance of RAYWA’s mission is underscored by compelling statistics:

An estimated 80% of adults with autism are unemployed or underemployed, highlighting a significant waste of potential.

About 53% of Generation Z identify as neurodiverse, suggesting that a substantial portion of the future workforce will benefit from enhanced support and understanding.

Despite being as capable as their neurotypical peers, many youth with autism face barriers that prevent them from accessing continued education and employment.

By addressing these challenges, RAYWA not only supports the individual growth and development of neurodiverse youth but also advocates for systemic changes that contribute to a more inclusive and equitable society. The work of RAYWA is vital in ensuring that youth with autism are given the opportunities to contribute to and thrive in our communities.

Our Impact: Supporting Youth with Autism

At RAYWA (Raising Awareness of Youth with Autism), we are committed to making a tangible difference in the lives of youth diagnosed with autism, both in the United States and globally. Our efforts focus on bridging the gap between the challenges these young individuals face and the opportunities they deserve. Here’s how we are contributing to creating more sustainable and fulfilling lives for them:

Educational Empowerment

We believe that education is a fundamental right and a critical stepping stone for future success. RAYWA partners with educational institutions to develop tailored programs that address the diverse learning needs of youth with autism. Our initiatives include:

Specialized Curricula: Working with educators to integrate adaptive learning methods that cater specifically to neurodiverse students.

Scholarships and Grants: Providing financial support to students and educational programs dedicated to autism, ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder educational opportunities.

Employment Opportunities

Transitioning from education to employment is a significant challenge for many autistic youth. RAYWA actively works to open pathways to employment through:

Internship Programs: Collaborating with corporate partners to offer internships that are designed to suit the unique abilities of neurodiverse individuals.

Career Workshops: Conducting sessions on career readiness, resume building, and interview preparation tailored to the needs of autistic youth.

Advocacy and Awareness

Awareness is the cornerstone of inclusion. RAYWA champions autism awareness through:

Community Events: Organizing and participating in events that promote autism awareness and foster community support.

Social Media Campaigns: Leveraging digital platforms to disseminate information, share success stories, and build a supportive online community.

Supportive Networks

Creating a supportive environment involves the collective effort of families, educators, and the community. RAYWA facilitates:

Family Workshops: Offering workshops that equip families with the tools and knowledge to support their autistic members effectively.

Professional Networks: Establishing networks of professionals who specialize in autism to share best practices and innovative solutions.

Global Perspective

While we are based in the United States, our vision and initiatives are international in scope. We recognize the disparities in support for autistic youth worldwide and strive to mitigate these through international collaboration and exchange of knowledge. Our programs are designed to be adaptable to different cultural and social contexts, ensuring relevance and effectiveness globally.

Global Perspective: Expanding Impact Beyond Borders

At RAYWA (Raising Awareness of Youth with Autism), our mission extends far beyond the boundaries of the United States, embracing a global approach to awareness, education, and inclusion for youth with autism. Here are some key metrics and strategic approaches that guide our international efforts:

Global Statistics on Autism

Prevalence: Studies indicate varying prevalence rates, with countries like the US reporting approximately 1 in 54 children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In contrast, data from other regions may be less comprehensive due to disparities in diagnostic facilities and awareness.

Education and Employment: Globally, it’s estimated that up to 80% of adults with autism are unemployed or underemployed, a challenge exacerbated in regions with fewer resources and less public awareness.

Our Global Initiatives

To address these challenges and reduce disparities in autism support worldwide, RAYWA implements several strategic initiatives:

International Educational Collaborations:

Capacity Building: We partner with local educational institutions in various countries to develop and enhance autism-specific curricula and teacher training programs.

Resource Distribution: Distributing educational materials and digital resources that can be adapted to local languages and cultural contexts.

Global Employment Programs:

Corporate Partnerships: Establishing connections with multinational corporations to create inclusive employment opportunities for neurodiverse youth. These partnerships focus on creating supportive workplace environments and tailored job training programs.

Entrepreneurship Support: Encouraging and supporting self-employment and entrepreneurial ventures among youth with autism through micro-grants and business mentorship programs, especially in regions with high unemployment rates.

Awareness and Advocacy:

International Conferences and Webinars: Hosting and participating in global forums to share knowledge, best practices, and recent advancements in autism research and support strategies.

Global Awareness Campaigns: Leveraging international days of recognition like World Autism Awareness Day to promote understanding and support for autism through digital campaigns and public events across different countries.

Support Networks:

Parent and Family Training: Providing online resources and virtual workshops for families of children with autism, tailored to address cultural and regional challenges in caregiving and advocacy.

Professional Exchange Programs: Facilitating knowledge exchange among autism professionals worldwide through fellowships and online platforms to foster global best practices.

Our Impact Metrics

Educational Programs: Enhanced educational outcomes for over 10,000 youth with autism through tailored educational initiatives across 15 countries.

Employment Initiatives: Successfully integrated over 1,000 neurodiverse individuals into the workforce through our global corporate partnerships.

Awareness Reach: Engaged millions globally through digital campaigns and partnerships with local NGOs to elevate the discourse around neurodiversity.

Through these efforts, RAYWA aims to create a world where youth with autism, regardless of where they live, have access to the resources and opportunities needed to thrive. Our commitment to a global perspective ensures that our impact is as diverse as the communities we serve, promoting a more inclusive and supportive world for all.

Our Mission:

Our mission is to focus on families and young women who require post-secondary support. We are set on raising awareness about these women who require extra support beyond their high school careers. RAYWA is enabling them with the right educational and vocational tools that match individual talent.

Our Vision:

We hope to land job opportunities for women with autism and provide women with autism the tools and resources they need in order to live a productive and independent lifestyle, after secondary education. RAYWA aspires to allow every young woman to have an equal opportunity to thrive in life, and offer their skill sets to the world.
